No Sugar Homemade Taco Seasoning
Why did I come up with no sugar homemade taco seasoning? Well, many store-bought taco seasonings include sweeteners or sugars. While the nutritional value of a seasoning is negligible, why consume sugars when you don’t have to.

As I mentioned, many commercially made taco seasonings include sugar, sweeteners and other ingredients you may not want when making dishes that call for taco seasoning. What are some of those unexpected ingredients?
- Sugar: Granulated sugar is often added for sweetness.
- Brown Sugar: This adds a molasses flavor along with sweetness.
- Cornstarch: While not a sugar, it is sometimes used as a thickening agent and can contribute to the carb content.
- Dextrose: A form of sugar derived from corn, often used as a sweetener.
- Maltodextrin: A carbohydrate that can be derived from starch and is sometimes used as a filler or sweetener.
- Honey Powder: Dehydrated honey that can add sweetness.
- Artificial Sweeteners: Some brands may use sugar substitutes like sucralose or aspartame, though this is less common.
I just checked the container we have from Costco. Not only is there sugar in there but also cocoa powder. Yet another reason to make a homemade DIY version.

Other motivations
Besides avoiding sugar and sweeteners, there might be other reasons you’ll want to make your own taco seasoning. Here are two of my motivators: taste and money.
- Customization: Homemade taco seasoning allows for personalization. I can adjust the spice levels and flavors to suit my taste preferences. For instance, my husband loves spice so he might add more chili powder for heat.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Purchasing individual spices in bulk can be more economical than buying pre-packaged seasoning mixes.
Making taco seasoning at home can be a simple and effective way to maintain a low-carb lifestyle while still enjoying flavorful meals.
Ingredients

Here’s what I put in my taco seasoning mix:
- 4 tablespoons chili powder
- 2 tablespoons ground cumin
- 2 teaspoons ground coriander
- 4 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
- 3 teaspoons fine sea salt
- 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon ground white pepper
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
I’ve measured out these ingredients so you’ll end up with 10 ounces of this homemade taco seasoning mix. It’s best to store this in an airtight container with a lid so make sure you have one clean and ready to go. Also, because plastic can sometimes absorb colors and odors from other ingredients, I would recommend going with a glass container, such as a mason jar.
Instructions
Basically, you’re adding all of the spices to your container, putting the top on and giving it a good shake. Then, every time you need taco seasoning, I would give it another good shake — with the top still on, naturally, so you don’t make a mess — and then scoop out however much taco seasoning your recipe calls for.
